What is the menopause?

The menopause is the end of a woman’s fertile period. During this phase of life, the ovaries stop gradually with the production of oestrogen, the female sex hormone.

Oestrogen affects the functioning of many organs and systems in the body, such as the cardiovascular system, breasts and urinary tract. The reduction of oestrogen production will change much in the female body during menopause. This may cause symptoms such as irregular bleeding, hot flashes, poor sleep, muscle and joint pain, mood swings, not wanting sex, depressed mood and headache. It is worth remembering that the menopause is not a disease, but that it can make you feel ill. Common symptoms

Menopause is often accompanied by various symptoms that vary in intensity and nature from woman to woman. Well-known symptoms are:

• Sleep disturbances and hot flushes
• Night sweats and irritability

• Dry skin, eyes and vaginal complaints
• Sexual changes and urinary tract problems

In addition, more serious symptoms may occur such as:

• Osteoporosis
• High blood pressure
• Cardiovascular diseases

These symptoms are mainly caused by the decrease in the hormone oestrogen.

Treatment options

Many menopause symptoms disappear on their own, but for women who suffer severely, there are several treatment options. A gynaecologist may prescribe hormonal therapies, such as tablets, patches or creams to replenish the oestrogen deficiency. For hot flushes only, non-hormonal medications, such as clonidine, can also help.
