Frequently asked questions about gynaecological examinations
What is a gynaecological examination?
A gynaecological examination is a medical examination of the female genital organs. It can be performed in case of complaints or as part of a preventive check-up.
Does a gynaecological examination hurt?
A gynaecological examination can sometimes feel uncomfortable, but it usually does not hurt. The doctor always tries to make it as pleasant as possible.
Can I have a gynaecological examination during my period?
For most examinations, you can have them during your period. Please contact us in advance if you are unsure whether the examination can be performed. Our gynaecologists will gladly determine with you whether the examination can take place or must be postponed. If you do not feel comfortable, you can also change your appointment to a time when you are not menstruating.
What is an external gynaecological examination?
During an external examination, the gynaecologist looks at the outside of the genitals and may feel the lower abdomen. This helps to identify abnormalities or sensitivities.
What is an internal gynaecological examination?
In an internal examination, the doctor examines through the vagina, often with a speculum or by feeling internally with two fingers. This is performed carefully and as comfortably as possible. After this, the gynaecologist may perform an internal ultrasound to assess the uterus and ovaries.
