Contraception questions and advice

What is contraception?

Contraception, also known as contraceptives, are methods that prevent you from becoming pregnant when you have sex. It is important to know that each contraceptive works differently and has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Which contraceptive is best for you depends on what you think is important. So it is wise to think about this and talk about it with your partner.

Some common contraceptive methods:

  • The pill: a hormone pill taken daily.
  • The condom: a thin latex or plastic cover rolled over the penis.
  • The shot pill: a hormone injection given every three months.
  • The hormone rod: a small flexible rod inserted under the skin of the upper arm.
  • Sterilisation: an operation that closes the fallopian tubes in women or the vas deferens in men.
  • IUD: a small plastic or copper object inserted into the uterus that prevents pregnancy.

Choosing the right contraceptive is a personal decision to be made based on individual needs and circumstances.
