Moles

Moles are benign accumulations of pigment cells in the skin. They may be present at birth (congenital birthmarks) or develop over the years. The appearance of birthmarks is determined by genetic predisposition and by (excessive) sun exposure.

There are normal (benign), unsettled (dysplastic/atypical) and malignant birthmarks (melanomas).

It is normal to have birthmarks. Everyone has them. When in doubt about a mole, it is best to have it assessed by your GP or dermatologist.

A benign mole does not need to be treated. However, it can be removed for cosmetic reasons. If there is any suspicion of melanoma, the mole will always be removed and investigated further.
