Haemorrhoids
Haemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in or around the anus and rectum, which prolapse due to excessive pressure. Although haemorrhoids are often harmless, they can cause discomfort and symptoms such as itching, blood loss and pain. At Wetering Medical Centre, we offer expert care and effective treatment options tailored to your personal situation.

What are haemorrhoids?
Haemorrhoids are natural swelling bodies that help seal the anus airtight and watertight. With increased pressure in the area, such as from hard pressing or chronic constipation, these swelling bodies can swell and sag. This can lead to symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to more severe symptoms.
The cause of haemorrhoids
The most common causes (but not exclusively) of haemorrhoids are:
- Hard pressing during bowel movements.
- Chronic constipation or diarrhoea.
- Pregnancy and childbirth.
- Prolonged sitting, for example on the toilet.
- Insufficient fibre in the diet and not enough fluid intake.
Reducing these risk factors can help prevent or reduce symptoms.
Symptoms of haemorrhoids
Haemorrhoids can manifest themselves in various ways, such as:
- Itching around the anus.
- Pain or a burning sensation during bowel movements.
- Loss of blood during defecation.
- Feeling of pressure or a lump near the anus.
Do you recognise these symptoms? If so, make an appointment at Wetering Medical Centre for expert advice and treatment.
Treatment of haemorrhoids at Medisch Centrum Wetering
Treatment of this condition may consist of:
- lifestyle advice, pelvic floor therapy and diet
For mild haemorrhoids, we focus on modifying your lifestyle to reduce pressure on the blood vessels and prevent future symptoms. - rubber band ligation (Barron ligations)
An effective procedure in which a rubber band is placed around the haemorrhoid. This causes the haemorrhoid to die and be shed on its own. - injections with sclerosing fluid
A treatment in which a special fluid is injected into the haemorrhoid to shrink it. - surgery (rare)
For very severe cases that do not respond to other treatments, surgery may be considered.
